Conference Championships Galore!

What Games are on Tap This Weekend?
The thrilling taste of victory...or the bitter draught of defeat. Either way, we've got you covered.

Good day, everyone! The final, snow-wreathed sun has set upon the 2025 regular season of the sport we all alternatively love and loathe. The plebeians of the sport (that'd be most of you) have the upcoming weekend off to think about what you've done. But that doesn't mean that we won't have football. Oh, no! This is conference championship week. Nine leagues will hold contests this weekend for bragging rights, college football playoff appearances, or just the chance to see the old alma mater's squad take the field one last time before bowl season.

Let's have a rundown of this weekend's contests, with a single thought about each of them.

Sun Belt Championship (Friday, 7:00 pm EST, ESPN), Troy vs. James Madison, JMU -23.5

At least this is a one-on-one matchup. It doesn't feel nearly as fair when a single 5'4" guy has to play an entire team.

Conference USA Championship (Friday, 7:00 pm EST, CBSSN), Kennesaw State vs. Jacksonville State, KSU -2.5

I'm not sure what's more surprising to me, that Kennesaw State and Jacksonville State are now in Conference USA, or that "Kennesaw" and "Jacksonville" are now states.

American Athletic Conference Championship (Friday, 8:00 pm EST, ABC), North Texas vs. Tulane, UNT -2.5

If these two teams played a neutral site game at Kinnick Stadium, after the end of the first quarter they could give a Mean Green Wave to the kids in the hospital.

Mountain West Championship (Friday, 8:00 pm EST, Fox), UNLV vs. Boise State, UNLV -4.5

Even one thought devoted to this game would be one too many.

Big 12 Championship (Saturday, 12:00 pm EST, ABC), BYU vs. Texas Tech, TTU -12.5

Texas Tech is still probably in the CFP field even with a loss in this game, but a Cougar loss would really test the Committee's assertion that it won't punish teams for championship game losses. Especially if stiffing BYU would give them an excuse to sneak Notre Dame into the playoff field.

Mid-American Conference Championship (Saturday, 12:00 pm EST, ESPN), Miami (NTM) against Western Michigan, WMU -2.5

My Broncos go for their first MAC championship since 2016, when P.J. Fleck was still rowing the boat down the sidelines in Kalamazoo. The vile Redhawk menace must be destroyed. Go Ocnorbs!!!

Southeastern Conference Championship (Saturday, 4:00 pm EST, ABC), Alabama vs. Georgia, UGA -2.5

One of these teams will be heading to the College Football Playoff with a win. The other will probably be heading to the College Football Playoff, because there's no better quality loss in the sport than one that's picked up in this game, amirite?

Big Ten Championship (8:00 pm EST, Fox), Indiana vs. Ohio State, OSU -4

O.K., for real this time. One of these teams will be the #1 overall seed in the College Football Playoff with a win. The other will head to the College Football Playoff after picking up the best quality loss in the sport.

"Atlantic" Coast Conference Championship (8:00 pm EST, ABC), Duke vs. Virginia, UVA -3.5

It says a lot about the ACC that a 10-2 Virginia squad is just a 3.5-point favorite over a Duke team that went 7-5 and got absolutely waxed by Illinois. There are nine conference championship games this weekend, and this one might wind up with the worst TV ratings of them all.

What game are you looking forward to most this weekend? No, basketball games don't count. Please share your thoughts in the comments.
