Trivia uhhh.... Wednesday - Hawkeyes/Cornhuskers Edition
I'll be honest, I lost track of time when I got back from vacation. So this is going out a day late. This week's questions are corn flavored. Don't blame me. Blame Iowa and Nebraska.
Answers to Week 2 questions:
1 What is the largest margin of victory in the Purdue/Indiana football series and who won the game?
Purdue defeated Indiana 68-0 in 1892. No word yet on whether Cignetti will try to eclipse that mark this year.
Funniest incorrect answer: Michaux John's rambling incoherent answer.
2 How many technical foul shots were there in a row when Bobby Knight threw a chair across the floor in a childish tantrum?
Five minutes into the game, Knight was given a technical call arguing a foul call in the Indiana-Purdue game. Before Steve Reid could attempt the resulting free throws, Knight threw a red plastic chair across the floor and was charged with his second technical foul and soon received his third as he continued arguing. In 1985, it took three technical fouls to be ejected from the game. Reid went 3/6 but Purdue won 72-63 and Bobby Knight was sick and f*cking tired of losing to Purdue.
Funniest incorrect answer: probably like 10 or something (Broated Nutcrackle)
3 How many NASA astronauts have attended Purdue?
27 Purdue alumni have become astronauts including Neil Armstrong and Eugene Cernan.
Funniest incorrect answer: 1 for sure, but I’ll say 5 (wesd2005)
4 Who is the Big Ten's all time leading scorer in basketball?
Now when I wrote this I meant to be referring to men's basketball, but that's not how I actually wrote the question. Calbert Cheaney's 2613 is the men's basketball record for the Big Ten, but Caitlin Clark scored 3951 points for Iowa. I'll be generous and give 3 points for anyone that answered Cheaney, but Clark gets the 4 points.
Funniest incorrect answer: Has to be Aaron Craft over his 15+ year career (Broated Nutcrackle)
5 How many national parks are in Indiana and what are they named?
The U.S. National Park Service's website lists 3 but seeing as two are really national historical places rather than just straight up national parks (Lincoln's Boyhood Home and something called the George Rogers Clark), I'm going to say the real answer is 1 (Indiana Dunes).
Funniest incorrect answer: Absolutely no clue. Fewer than Minnesota has lakes. Pretty sure about that. (Need a new Nickname)
6 What song is played by the Purdue marching band (with accompanying vocals - most famously by Jim Nabors) before the Indianapolis 500 ever year?
Back Home Again in Indiana
Funniest incorrect answer: Pink Pony Club (ViceroyFizzlebottom)
7 Indiana and Purdue both have campus versions of an Indy 500 in the spring. How do both schools pay homage to the event and what are the names of their races?
Little 500 (bike race at IU) and the Grand Prix (go carts at Purdue)
Funniest incorrect answer: Little 500 and BoilerBot Demolition Derby (Need a new Nickname) - the horror!. IronMonkee, as a Purdue Solar Car Racing alumni I object to your designation of solar cars as "nerdy"
8 The death of which US President led to the cancelation of a Purdue/Indiana basketball game that was not rescheduled? Bonus point if you guess the year as well.
President Benjamin Harrison died March 13, 1901 and was a member of the Purdue Board of Trustees at the time. Purdue mourned the death of Harrison and the game scheduled for March 15 (what was to be the second IU-Purdue bball game ever) was cancelled. The cancellation has been disputed by official Indiana and Purdue records (both schools officially record a Purdue 2-0 season sweep over Indiana), but both school's 1901 yearbooks make no mention of the game and there is a curious lack of newspaper records of it occurred. I suppose that means the series is really only 127-93 in Purdue's favor.
Funniest incorrect answer: William Henry Harrison, 1841 (Broated Nutcrackle). Basketball wouldn't be invented for another 50 years.
9 Name the most recent Indiana Hoosier football first round draft pick.
Wide receiver Thomas Lewis is the most recent first round pick (1994) for the Hoosiers.
Funniest incorrect answer: Idk, I just know it was before I was born (Juicemachine26)
10 Which Big Ten men's basketball coaches won the most Big Ten regular season titles in their first 29 seasons as the head coach of a Big Ten program?
The wording was important here. Technically three Big Ten men's basketball coaches have won 11 regular season conference titles each. However, Tom Izzo won his 11th last year in his 30th season. So the answer is Ward "Piggy" Lambert (Purdue) and Bobby Knight (Indiana).
Funniest incorrect answer: The way this question is worded gave me a stroke (Broated Nutcrackle)
