Trivia Tuesday - Hoosier/Boilermaker Edition
Welcome back to another addition of Trivia Tuesday. This week the questions will be Indiana and Purdue themed in honor of our Bucket week previews. Before we get to this week's questions however, let's see how last week's participants did.
Answers to Week 1 questions:
- Who won the Heisman trophy while playing for the Gophers?
Bruce Smith won the Heisman in 1941.
Funniest incorrect answer: Ichabod Grundle (ViceroyFizzlebottom) - The Badgers are famous for producing NFL caliber running backs, so we will ignore that. Name the Badger football player with the most career college receiving yards.
Lee Evans with 3382 yards from 1999 to 2003. Al Toon is 6th on the list.
Funniest incorrect answer: wisconsin so I don't care (IronMonkee) - In which sport have Minnesota and wisconsin combined for their most national championships and how many have there been? If your answer is a sport with men's and women's teams, consider those separate sports and specific which.
Women's hockey has combined for 15 with 8 for the Badgers and 7 for the Gophers. If you got the sport right, you'll get 2/3 points.
There were no funny incorrect answers. - How many lakes (defined here as bodies of water greater than 10 acres in size) are there in Minnesota?
11,842. They should update the state motto from "Land of 10,000 Lakes".
Funniest incorrect answer: Will let the native state nerds haggle over this one (Need a new username...) - Name the most popular liquor in the state of wisconsin.
Brandy.
Funniest incorrect answer: Miller Lite (IronMonkee). That's not liquor. - What was the name of the trophy that Minnesota and wisconsin football played for prior to the Axe and what happened to it?
Slab of bacon. Stolen or "misplaced" by wisconsin after 1943, it was "rediscovered" in 1994. One point for the name, two points for what happened to it.
Funniest incorrect answer on what happened to it: lost in a train robbery (Juicemachine26). Toughest competition for bonus points was here. - Name all the trophies that the Gophers currently play for in head-to-head regular season football games.
The Little Brown Jug (Michigan), Floyd of Rosedale (Iowa), Paul Bunyan's Axe (wisconsin), and the Governor's Victory Bell (Penn State). No penalty for including the 5 Bits of Broken Chair trophy although it's technically unofficial. - Name the sport, opponent, and number of games won in a row of the Badgers longest active winning streak against a Big Ten opponent. The streak can be home games only, road games only, or any venue.
I'll be honest, I didn't bother to find the answer to this before I asked it and after posting the article decided this was too much work. For all I know wisconsin tennis has beaten Penn State 35 straight times. I've attempted to assess active streaks in the sports guessed (football, women's volleyball, and football) and awarded 1 point each for the correct sport, opponent, and number of games.
In men's basketball, the Badgers have beaten Indiana 21 consecutive times at home. That's three more than their current overall winning streak against Purdue football. Don't feel too bad Hoosier fans. Penn State snapped their losing streak at the Kohl Center at 22. - What fictional language was taught at the University of Wisconsin-Madison campus during the early 2000s?
Despite the many guesses of Klingon causing me to go verify that the Internet has no record of it being taught in Madison, the answer I was looking for was Elvish as I recalled this from my campus tour at wisconsin back in the summer of 2007. I would have also accepted either Sindarin and Quenya. - The University of Minnesota played their first intercollegiate football game in 1882. Who did the Gophers play in that game and what was the final score?
Hamline University. Gophers won 4-0. Two points for the team, one point for the score which nobody got.
Funniest incorrect answer: Themselves (Need a new username...) - Did you cheat? Be honest.
No admitted cheaters!
Week 1 Standings
MNW: 23 points (3, 0, 4, 3 - closest with "something like 11,800" so I'll give three points. No bonus point for being the first "correct" answer because a) he insinuated this was a stupid question and b) he was still off by 42 lakes, 3, 4, 3, 0, 0, 3)
IronMonkee: 21 points (4, 2, 2, 2 - partial credit for 11k and a bit, 2, 1, 4, 0, 4, 0)
Juicemachine26: 19 points (3, 0, 0, 2 - partial credit for >11000, 3, 3, 3, 0, 3 - close enough, 2)
Need a new username...: 12 points (0, 4, 1 - guessed hockey but didn't specify men's or women's, 2, 0, 1, 0, 2, 0, 2). Definitely the participant the most sought to get bonus points for funniest incorrect answer when they didn't know. Appreciate it.
ViceroyFizzlebottom: 11 points (2, 3, 2, 0, 0, 1, 3, 0, 0, 0)
AlmaOtter: 8 points (2 for question 3, 3 for questions 5 and 6)
ajcusterIU: 6 points (4 for question 5, 2 for question 8)
wesd2005: 6 points (2 for question 3, 3 for question 5, 1 for question 6)
chitownhawkeye: 3 points (answered only question 6)
Scoring works as follows:
All correct answers get 3 points.
Fastest user to answer each question correctly gets 1 bonus point.
Fastest user to answer all questions correctly gets 5 bonus points.
Subsequent users to get all questions correct, get 4 bonus points.
Funniest incorrect answers get 2 points.
At the end of the offseason, a grand champion will be crowned!
